Which auto-reader do I need for the 3M Attest 1491 and 1492V?
Which auto-reader do I need for the 3M Attest 1491 and 1492V?
A 3M Attest Auto-reader 490 or 490H with software version 4.2.7 or greater, or the 3M Attest Mini Auto-reader 490M. The 24-minute result is read automatically by fluorescence.
Which steam cycles does the 1492V monitor?
Which steam cycles does the 1492V monitor?
Dynamic-air-removal (pre-vacuum and SFPP) steam cycles: 132°C (270°F) for 3 or 4 minutes and 135°C (275°F) for 3 minutes.
What is the difference between the 1492V and the 1491?
What is the difference between the 1492V and the 1491?
The 1492V (brown cap) is for dynamic-air-removal (pre-vacuum) cycles. The 3M Attest 1491 (blue cap) is for gravity-displacement cycles. Both give a 24-minute result.
Can I buy a single box?
Can I buy a single box?
No. The 1492V is sold by the case: 50 indicators per box, 4 boxes per case (200 indicators).
How often should I spore test my sterilizer?
How often should I spore test my sterilizer?
The CDC recommends biological monitoring (spore testing) of each sterilizer at least weekly, and with every load that contains an implantable device. Your state or local regulations may require more frequent testing.
What should I do if a spore test fails (positive result)?
What should I do if a spore test fails (positive result)?
Take the sterilizer out of service and repeat the spore test right away using the same cycle. If the mechanical and chemical indicators show the sterilizer is working properly, a single positive result often points to operator error, such as loading or packaging. If the repeat test is also positive, do not use the sterilizer until it has been inspected or repaired and passes spore tests in three consecutive cycles.
Isn't the color change on the pouch or tape enough?
Isn't the color change on the pouch or tape enough?
No. Chemical indicators show that the sterilizing agent reached the item, but they do not prove sterilization was achieved. Only a biological indicator (spore test) confirms that highly resistant spores were killed.
Is a rapid-readout result as reliable as a 24- or 48-hour test?
Is a rapid-readout result as reliable as a 24- or 48-hour test?
Yes. Independent studies published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology found rapid-readout biological indicators to be as sensitive as conventional 24- and 48-hour indicators, and the fluorescence results correlate with the 7-day visual readout.
