In a properly designed Sterile Processing Department (SPD), instruments move in one direction — from the dirty side to the clean side — and never backward. After soiled instruments are decontaminated on the dirty side, they cross into the clean side to be inspected, assembled, packaged, labeled, and sterilized, then held in secure storage until they're needed at the point of care. This one-way workflow is the backbone of infection control: it prevents cross-contamination, protects the sterility of every processed pack, and gives your team the traceability required to prove that each item was handled correctly. 

Labeling and storage is where that clean-side workflow comes together.
