Choosing a refurbished sterilizer comes down to a few questions:

1. Is it cleared for your setting? Not every sterilizer is FDA-cleared for use in a medical or dental practice — some are intended for laboratory, research, veterinary, or tattoo/body-art use only. If you're sterilizing instruments that contact patients, make sure the model you choose is FDA-cleared for clinical use. Not sure? Ask us before you buy and we'll confirm it's right for your setting.
2. Check your instrument IFUs first. Your instruments' Instructions for Use (IFUs) tell you exactly what kind of sterilizer they require — including whether they need a Class B or Class S cycle. Start here, because the IFU sets the requirement; the autoclave has to meet it, not the other way around.
3. Class B or Class S? This follows directly from your IFUs. Class B pre/post-vacuum autoclaves (like the Tuttnauer T-Top 11B or SciCan Bravo or Lexa-Plus) use active vacuum to force air out and steam in, so they can sterilize complex tray sets, hollow, and lumened instruments. Class S units handle a manufacturer-specified range of loads, and gravity-displacement autoclaves are fine for simpler instruments.  When in doubt, a Class B covers the widest range.
4. What are you sterilizing, and how much? Match the chamber size and tray count to your typical load. Benchtop units like the Tuttnauer 1730 or Midmark M9/M11 suit smaller offices, while large-capacity and Priorclave or Steris Amsco models handle high-volume surgical, veterinary, and laboratory work.
5. Steam or dry heat? Most practices use a steam autoclave. Dry heat sterilizers (Rh-Pro, SteriDent, Wayne) are a good fit for carbon-steel instruments and offices that want to avoid moisture and rust.
6. Manual or automatic? Manual autoclaves cost less and give you hands-on control of each cycle, and are more prone to user-error; automatic models close, run, and vent at the touch of a button — better for busy offices that want a hands-off workflow.
