Place the test pack in an otherwise empty sterilizer, near the drain.  The pack \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003econsists of a series of air removal and steam penetration barriers and a chemical indicator at the center of each pack. Place a pre-assembled disposable Once-A-Day® test pack in the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003ehorizontal position on the lowest shelf (above the drain) of the empty \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003esterilizer. (The Bowie \u0026amp; Dick protocol* requires that only the test pack \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003emay be in the sterilizer during the test).\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003e3. Run a regular sterilization cycle - but limit the exposure time to 3½ \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eminutes at 270-276°F,132-135°C). If half minute exposures cannot be \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"background-color: initial;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003eselected on the sterilizer, a 4-minute exposure time may be used.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eUnder no circumstances should the test exceed 4 minutes. Longer \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eexposure invalidates the test.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003e4. In the interest of saving time, the drying phase may be omitted.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eAfter the test, remove the pack from the autoclave.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eCaution: Pack maybe be hot.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003e5. Open the pack. Remove the test sheet by pulling on the protruding \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eedge of the test sheet. Interpret the result.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003e6. The presence of an area where the indicating ink has not yet changed to \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eblack is a possible indication of a failure. The color of the incompletely \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003echanged area may be dark brown, light brown, or the original white \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003ecolor of the unprocessed indicator ink.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003e7. Overexposure caused by excessive temperature, time, or both will cause \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003ethe black endpoint color to shift to an overall gray tone. Since the test \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 12px;\"\u003erequires the appropriate exposure conditions, a test resulting in an \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 12px;\"\u003eoverexposure is invalid and must be repeated with correct \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003eexposure \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003econditions. (If an indication of overexposure is observed when the correct \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eexposure time is used, the temperature adjustment on the sterilizer may \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003enot be accurately calibrated and may require the attention of a qualified \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003emechanic). The appearance of shiny grayish areas is a sign of \"wet \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003esteam,\" a condition which requires careful attention to drying of sterilized \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003epackages. This condition should be eliminated.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003e8. The date, the sterilizer number, and the operator's initials can be entered \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eon the Once-A-Day® test sheet following the test. File the exposed test \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003esheet with the appropriate records for that sterilizer.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003e9. Any result other than a pass must immediately be brought to the attention \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eof the supervisor who will determine whether or not the sterilizer can be \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px; background-color: initial;\"\u003eused that day, or if it must be shut down until repaired.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12px;\"\u003e10.
